Dr John Loy Consultant Bariatric & Metabolic Surgeon

Dr Loy introduced MagDI to Ireland at Auralia in September 2026, alongside Prof Michel Gagner, who pioneered the procedure.

Your assessment is a chance to understand MagDI and discuss the alternatives. You do not need to choose a treatment before you speak to him.

The procedure, in plain words

Two small magnets.
A new connection in the intestine.

MagDI is performed as keyhole surgery under general anaesthesia.

    The magnets meet.

Two small magnets are positioned to bring two parts of the intestine together.

  2. Illustration of the joined magnets passing through the intestine after the connection forms
02 In the weeks that follow

    A connection forms.

The tissues join to create a new route. Once it has formed, the magnets pass naturally.

    The new route remains.

Some food takes the shorter route, changing how your body handles food and hunger signals.

Your treatment plan matters.

MagDI may be offered on its own, with a gastric sleeve, or after previous surgery. Expected results and recovery differ. Dr Loy will explain which, if any, could suit you.

A little more clarity

Questions
worth asking.

It’s natural to have questions, especially about something new. Bring all of them to your assessment.

Your care stays in Ireland.
A specialist team, local follow-up and support after surgery.

Is MagDI surgery?

Yes. It is keyhole surgery under general anaesthesia. Magnets form the intestinal connection. If your plan includes a gastric sleeve, that part of the operation removes part of the stomach and uses staples.

Who could it suit?

MagDI may be considered for selected adults for whom weight-loss or metabolic surgery is appropriate, including some people who have already had weight-loss surgery. Your medical history and goals matter. An assessment is the right place to find out; you do not need to work out your eligibility yourself.

It’s new. What do we know so far?

MagDI is new to Ireland. Published studies and clinical experience are growing, and longer-term follow-up continues. Dr Loy will explain the evidence, what is still being learned and what that means for your decision.

How much weight could I lose?

Results depend on your treatment pathway, starting point and ongoing care. Outcomes from MagDI combined with a sleeve should not be treated as outcomes for MagDI alone. Dr Loy will discuss realistic expectations for your circumstances.

What are the risks and recovery?

Every operation carries risks, including bleeding, infection and the possibility of further treatment. Recovery depends on your health and treatment plan. Many patients stay one night, with a longer stay possible when MagDI is combined with a sleeve. Most return to desk work in one to two weeks. Dr Loy will explain what to expect in your case.

How much does it cost?

The assessment is free. The procedure price depends on your treatment plan. You receive a personalised quote explaining what is included before deciding whether to proceed. The team can also explain available finance options.

Who supports me afterwards?

Auralia provides structured follow-up, dietitian support, its weight-loss app and a 24/7 surgical emergency line. Your individual plan sets out the care and appointments you will receive.

What happens when I send the form?

A patient coordinator calls within one working day to arrange your free assessment with Dr Loy, online or in person. Sending an enquiry does not commit you to treatment.

On this design preview, the form only demonstrates the confirmation. It does not send or save your details.
